Climbing on Hvar – Croatian island

Rock climbing on Hvar in the past few years has become increasingly popular. I watch young and old, girls and boys every day, with heavy equipment on their backs as they leave the way to nearby hills. Here in Vela Stiniva has some good climbing routes, but let’s start with few general explanations.

What is rock climbing?

Firstly, rock climbing is a part of the growing group of activities often classed as extreme sports. It is a physically and mentally demanding sport, which requires strength, endurance, agility, and balance along with mind control.

Briefly, rock climbing is a sport in which people climb up, down or across natural rock formations. The goal is to reach the endpoint of a pre-defined route without falling. Knowledge of proper climbing techniques and usage of specialized climbing equipment is most important for the safe completion of routes.

Rock climbing equipment

In short, the essential equipment includes :

  1. specialized shoes to provide extra grip on the rock surface.
  2. harness to attach the ropes.
  3. various types of anchors.
  4. climbing helmets and clothing

Around the world, different systems are used to grade rock climbs. Five most popular systems are French, UIAA, YDS, Great Britain and Australian. For example, the routes in Vela Stiniva are graded from 5a to 8a in the French system. 5a is for beginners and 8a is for super experts so everyone can find a route for themselves.
